What's New--For You?

“I usually like sparkly things,” says someone. “But I’ve been feeling drawn to colors that are more subdued.”

 

“Wow,” says her friend. “For me, it’s just the opposite. I’m usually ‘Earth tones all the way,’ but lately I’ve been craving color, something really vivid. That feels more alive to me right now.”

 

Our tastes change. The important thing to focus on is what calls to you now. That doesn’t mean tossing jewelry you’ve loved for years. You may be madly in love with it down the road. But if you’re wearing something simply because you’re used to it—is that how you want to live your life? The jewelry you wear now should reflect who you are now.

 

This month gives our two friends a great opportunity to test this out. We’ve got one of the boldest gemstones as our May companion—emerald, which we wrote about here.

But emerald isn’t our only companion this month. The other birthstone is, as you see in “Did Somebody Say Emerald?”, one of your Jewelry Doctor’s favorite stones: agate.

 

Why agate? Oh, honey, because it comes in all shapes and sizes, lots of different colors, and you can do so much with it. And agate has been around for a long, long time. Here’s a pair of agate earrings from the Victorian age that look as though they might have been designed last week.

The Case of the Pesky Ex-Phone Number (Perhaps You've Had One?) and Our Real Phone Number

Once upon a time there was a company called Merchant Circle (“MC,” for short). The nice people at Merchant Circle thought it would be a good idea to create a listing for Laynie Tzena Design, home of the San Francisco Jewelry Doctor. Great! Except for the fact that they used our old phone number.

So: If you see a phone number ending in -3690, that’s the ex. The correct number is (and has been for years, MC): 

415/796-3969.

We now return to our regularly scheduled program.

“But why hasn’t MC gotten rid of the old number? You contacted them, right?”

Indeed we have—corrected the listing on their site, called them, written to them. But alas, they have yet to respond. Hence, we are writing to the most important person—You! (We are still hoping they will correct things on their end. But as long as you know how to reach us, that’s what counts.)

Now the bad news: When MC took down the listing with the old phone number the reviews from our beloved customers who had posted there were also deleted.

Pictures Are A Wonderful Thing, or All Is Not Lost, Part Three

Dear San Francisco Jewelry Doctor:

 

I saw your story about recreating lost jewelry, and I am here today to tell you that you are wrong. My late jeweler, who is now designing for the stars in the sky, drew the engagement ring for my now-fiancée, and then created it in three different kinds of gold. When I lost my jeweler, we also lost that ring—forever. My friend also lost a tree pendant that had been created in rose gold. It, too, was unique.

 

So while I’m sure you’re very good at what you do, you cannot recreate jewelry like the pieces I described. Admit it.

First of all, please accept my condolences on the loss of a treasured person in your life. It sounds as though you may have worked with a metalsmith*. That is a great thing. Metalsmiths are wonderful. No doubt about it. We have metalsmiths on our team, and we have enormous respect for their gifts.

 

That said, when it comes to jewelry that is purely metalwork, for example a design in gold or silver, unless you have/had the ability to travel back in time to work with Michelangelo directly**, chances are, your original jeweler based his/her design on a drawing (from something s/he saw or imagined), which can be recreated—once you provide us with either a photograph or a sketch. (We are also jewelers. We draw. We work from drawings. And we have imagination, too.)

 

So don’t despair! Call us at 415/796-3969 (text 415/596-4244), and that ring will soon be back on her finger. And about that tree? We can make that, too. (We love trees. We have seen many a beautiful tree, and drawn or taken pictures of lots of them. Happy to recreate your tree, and did you know we also have some wonderful trees in our collection of finished jewelry?)
